Bangladesh needs to encourage production of cash crop like jute. It is necessary to improve varietals survive only on its traditional use. Besides strengthening its traditional use, diversified use of jute therefore needs to be encouraged and production of paper pulp from green jute would be useful alternative.

Identification of gene(s) linked to cold tolerant trait and handing this over to breeders for sue in breeding programs. Transforming farmer popular jute with protein genes linked to cold tolerant trait and known to confer cold tolerance in other crops.

The overall objective of the present project is to improve the agronomic performance of pulses including lentil, chickpea and mungbean through biotechnological approach. Varieties conferring fungal disease resistance will be developed with the help of modern biotechnology. Particularly the biotechnological methods of plant genetic transformation will be applied for these crops to develop desired fungal disease resistance varieties. For this purpose Agro bacterium-mediated genetic transformation will be used to transfer desirable fungal disease resistance gene/s into these crops.

Bangladesh needs to increase the production of pulses (grain legumes) to satisfy the ever-increasing demand of human consumption over the next few years in keeping up with the requirements. Under these circumstances only improved varieties of our local grain legumes (pulses) would be required to increase the production as well as to create interest to the farmers in cultivating these crops.
