DU Live: The people suffering from communication disorders are getting their life more complicated with added misery due to lack of public awareness and a stigma with a discriminatory attitude, said Saima Wazed, Chairperson of National Advisory Committee on Autism in Bangladesh.

Terming the need for having an effective and inclusive communication mode as an indispensable part in the overall development process of the nation, Saima called for addressing the plight of the impaired people who, she deem, are, at times, equal in terms of intellectual capacity.

“Such speech and language impaired people require a comprehensive approach and a special attention from their peers and aides alongside a massive countrywide awareness campaign, based on scientific knowledge, can lead to a change in their lives,” pleaded Saima, also a member of the Expert Advisory Panel on Mental Health, World Health Organization.

She was inaugurating the Communication Disorders Department of Dhaka University at a function in the auditorium of Bangabandhu Bhaban here today.

“Inception of this department (Communication Disorders) could usher in a new era in the study of this complicated problem, while the students can take up the lead in enlightening the public minds to dispel the public misconceptions in this regard,” she said.

Prof AAMS Arefin Siddiq, Vice Chancellor Dhaka University, Prof Hakim Arif, Chairman, Department of Communications Disorders, among others, also spoke on the occasion while enrolled students took part in the event.

Launched in April, 2015, this department currently has two batches of masters students while the first batch in under-graduation level has been enrolled this year.
