Obtained SSC degree  in 1964 from  P.A.F. Public School, Lower Topa, Murree Hills, Pakistan; H. S. C. in 1966 from Notre Dame College, Dhaka;  B.A. Honours in English in1969 from Department of English, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh; M. A. in English in 1970 from Department of English, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan; Postgraduate Diploma in EFL/ESL in 1976 from Department of Linguistics, University of Wales, Bangor, the U.K; Specialization in Applied Linguistics in1989 from Overseas Education Unit, University of Leeds, the U.K;  PhD  in  2000 from University of Dhaka for the research on “Time’ in the Plays of Arthur Miller”; completed Post Doctoral  Research in 2002 – 20003 at Purdue University, the U.S.A.

Began university teaching career after the Independence of Bangladesh in 1972 at the Dept. of English, University of Chittagong as a lecturer. Since 1973 teaching at the Dept. of English, University of Dhaka. Taught English as a lecturer at the Institute of Foreign Languages, University of Oran, Algeria from 1976 to 1980. Worked as an adviser/adjunct faculty in more than a dozen public and private universities in the country.

Research publications are mainly in the fields of literature, Linguistics and ELT.
