Professor Dr. Laila N. Islam had been working in the fields of Immunology, Clinical and Nutritional Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Occupational Health and Toxicology for the last 35 years. She worked on the functional activities of human blood neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes in response to chemotactic factors, bacterial antigens, and mitogens. She studied the functions of neutrophils from monkeys with experimental shigellosis, children with shigellosis, and from patients with diabetes mellitus. She studied the biochemical, immunological, and molecular markers in patients with hepatitis B and C virus infections. She evaluated the functions of serum complement in patients with diabetes mellitus, pulmonary tuberculosis, hypothyroidism, and in the garment workers. She had been engaged in investigation of the biochemical and immunological parameters in chronically exposed subjects to drinking water arsenic toxicity; effects of nutritional factors and antioxidant vitamins on the immune functions in human arsenic toxicity; health effects of occupational exposure to toxic heavy metals such as chromium by the tannery workers and Lead by the automobile workers in and around Dhaka city. She also studied the effect of iron deficiency anemia on the hematological and immune functions of the adolescent school children. More recently, Professor Islam has been investigating the biochemical and immunological aspects of oxidative stress in patients with cardiovascular diseases.
