Graphic design is one of the most diverse subjects of modern visual arts education. As a functional coexistence with visual identity and communication, graphic design is the most essential creative element in today’s era of the global info-com technology. Faculty of Fine Arts, the first and foremost institute to teach fine arts in Bangladesh started functioning under the strong leadership of Zainul Abedin, back in 1948 under the name of Government Institute of Arts. Under this institute, Department of Graphic Design was known as Department of Commercial Art in that period. It began its journey with prolific artist and designer of Bengal folklore, artist Quamrul Hasan, who was the first chairman of the department as well. later on, some other prominent artists like – artist Khawaja Shafique Ahmed, artist Quayyum Choudhury, artist Mustafa Monwar, artist Samarjit Roy Chowdhury, artist Syed Ali Azam and artist Jameer Uddin joined as teachers. Having been morphed into a department of governmental degree college, the institute started offering BFA degree from 1963. Masters in Fine Arts program has been introduced since 1978. In 1983 this college merged with the Dhaka University and became an institute. Honours courses have been introduced since session 1992-93. The Institute, later on, has turned into a full-fledged faculty of Dhaka University and was called as - The Faculty of Fine Art since 2008. At present the Department offers courses for a four-year BFA Honors and MFA degree in Graphic Design. The Department also provides supervision for PhD research degrees.
