কম্পিউটার বিজ্ঞান ও প্রকৌশল বিভাগ যাত্রা শুরু করেছে ১৯৯২ সালের ১লা সেপ্টেম্বর মাস্টার্স প্রোগ্রাম চালুর মাধ্যমে। বিভাগের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা চেয়ারম্যান ছিলেন অধ্যাপক ড. এম. লুৎফর রহমান। প্রতিষ্ঠাকালে বিভাগের অবস্থান ছিল বর্তমান তথ্য প্রযুক্তি ইনস্টিটিউটের (তৎকালীন কম্পিউটার সেন্টার) একতলার তিনটি কক্ষে। ১৯৯৪-১৯৯৫ শিক্ষাবর্ষে ২০ জন ছাত্র-ছাত্রী নিয়ে ১ম বর্ষ বি. এসসি. (সম্মান) শ্রেণির ক্লাস শুরু হয়। ১৯৯৮ সালের জানুয়ারি মাসে বিভাগটি বর্তমান নিউ সায়েন্স কমপ্লেক্স ভবনের ৩য় ও ৪র্থ তলায় স্থায়ীভাবে স্থানান্তরিত হয়। নতুন ভবনে স্থানান্তরের পর আসন সংখ্যা ৬০-এ উন্নীত করা হয়। সিলেবাসের প্রয়োজনীয় পরিবর্তন ও পরিবর্ধনের মাধ্যমে ২৯/০৩/২০০৪ তারিখ হতে বিভাগের নামকরণ করা হয় কম্পিউটার সায়েন্স এন্ড ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং বিভাগ। বিভাগে বর্তমানে চার বছর মেয়াদি (আট সেমিস্টার) স্নাতক, দেড় বছর মেয়াদি (তিন সেমিস্টার) মাস্টার্স প্রোগ্রাম, এম. ফিল. ও পিএইচ. ডি. প্রোগ্রাম চালু রয়েছে।
বিভাগটিতে চারটি ক্লাস রুম, পাঁচটি ব্যবহারিক ক্লাস রুম, অফিস রুম, সেমিনার রুম, শিক্ষকদের বসার জন্য কয়েকটি রুম ও একটি শিক্ষক লাউঞ্জ নিয়ে শিক্ষাক্রম পরিচালনা করা হচ্ছে। বিভাগে ২০০টি সচল কম্পিউটার ও ১টি উচ্চক্ষমতা সম্পন্ন সার্ভার রয়েছে। প্রতিটি কম্পিউটার নেটওয়ার্কের মাধ্যমে যুক্ত। প্রথম থেকেই এই বিভাগের ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের জন্য ইন্টারনেট সুবিধা চালু রয়েছে। ২ নভেম্বর ২০১৬ তারিখে বাংলাদেশ হাইটেক পার্ক কর্তৃপক্ষ কর্তৃক অত্র বিভাগে ১টি অ্যানিমেশন ল্যাব স্থাপন করা হয়। চারটি ক্লাস ও চারটি ল্যাব রুমে মাল্টিমিডিয়া প্রজেক্টরের মাধ্যমে পাঠদান করা হয়। ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের সুবিধার্থে বিভাগে রাত ৮ টা পর্যন্ত ল্যাব খোলা রাখা হয়।
Department of Computer Science and Engineering
The Department of Computer Science started its journey on 1 September 1992 by opening the masters programme. Dr. M. Lutfar Rahman was the founding chairman of the Department. In 1995-96 academic session, 1st year B.Sc (Hons.) programme was inaugurated with 20 students. The number of seats was increased to 60 students after 1998. The Department was renamed as Department of Computer Science and Engineering on 29 March 2004 after implementing the required modification and augmentation of the existing academic syllabus. The Department currently offers a four-year (eight semesters) Honours programme, a one and a half year (three semesters) Masters programme and Ph. D programme.
In the last 20 years, the achievement of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering is remarkable. In 1997, this Department organized the first national computer conference at the University of Dhaka. This conference titled “International Conference on Computer and Information Technology” (ICCIT) has been taking place every year. The research works of the Faculty members of this Department are highly appreciated in the international arena. They also partiticipate in international conferences with quality papers and contribute as ICT advisors to several national organizations.
The performance of the students of the Department in also note-worthy. In the first National Collegiate Programming Contest in 2000, this Department stood first. Since then the students of this Department have been performing better than other universities in various Programming contests. They participated twice in ACM ICPC World finals in 2005 and 2009. Our students won the NCPC held in 2011. There have also been many successes in several software, robotics and other competitions.
Moreover, our students have left their mark in several software giants of the world. Many of our students are working in Google and Microsoft. Recently Google arranged a campus interview in our Department. Many of our students are working in big software companies in Bangladesh. Many of our graduates are doing Ph. D in the USA, Australia, Canada, the UK, Japan, Korea and other developed countries. Several graduates are also teaching at reputed foreign universities such as Oxford Brookes University, UK and Charles Sturt University, Australia.
The Department has four class rooms, five laboratory rooms, office room, seminar library, teacher’s lounge and several teachers’ rooms at Science Complex building (3rd & 4th floor). The Department has around 300 PCs and several high-configuration servers. Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park authority established an Animation Lab in this Department on 2 November 2016. Each of the PCs is connected via a Local Area Network. Since its very inception, the students of this Department have been enjoying high-speed internet connection. Classes and practical sessions are carried on in four class rooms and four laboratory rooms, each one equipped with multimedia projector facility. For the benefits of the students, the Departmental laboratory is kept open till 8 pm.
