ভূগোল ও পরিবেশ বিভাগ (১৯৪৭)

১৯৪৮ সালে অধ্যাপক নাফিস আহমদ (১৯১১-১৯৮২)-এর একক প্রচেষ্টায় বিজ্ঞান অনুষদের আওতাধীনে ভূগোল বিভাগের গোড়াপত্তন হয়। পরবর্তীতে ১৯৬৫ সালে বর্তমান ভবনে এবং ১৯৮১ সাল থেকে এই ভবনের সমগ্র দোতলা জুড়ে অত্র বিভাগের কার্যক্রম শুরু হয়। ২০০৮ সাল থেকে ৩০ জন শিক্ষক ও ৫০০ জন ছাত্রছাত্রী নিয়ে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আর্থ এন্ড এনভায়রনমেন্টাল সায়েন্সেস অনুষদের আওতাধীনে বিভাগীয় সকল কার্যক্রম পরিচালিত হচ্ছে।

১৯৫৬ সালে বিভাগ থেকে মাত্র ১৫ জন ছাত্রছাত্রীকে স্নাতকোত্তর পর্যায়ে প্রথম ডিগ্রি দেওয়া হয়। ১৯৫৪ সালে প্রথম স্নাতক সম্মান শ্রেণিতে ছাত্রছাত্রী ভর্তি করা হয় এবং ১৯৫৭ সালে সম্মান ডিগ্রি প্রদান করা হয়। ১৯৯৬ সাল থেকে সমন্বিত কোর্স পদ্ধতিতে চার বছরের সম্মান ডিগ্রি চালু করা হয় যা অর্জনের জন্য ছাত্রছাত্রীদেরকে চার বছরে সর্বমোট ৫৯টি কোর্স নিতে হয় যার মোট ক্রেডিট ১৪৫ (১ম বর্ষে ৩০, ২য় বর্ষে ৩৮, ৩য় বর্ষে ৩৭, ৪র্থ বর্ষে ৩০) এর মধ্যে ৫৩টি নিজ বিভাগে এবং অপর ৫টি কোর্স মাইনর হিসেবে অন্য বিভাগ থেকে নিতে হয়।

বর্তমানে স্নাতকোত্তর পর্যায়ে ছাত্রছাত্রীদের ৩টি শাখার (প্রাকৃতিক / মানবিক / নগরপরিকল্পনা ও উন্নয়ন) যেকোন একটি থেকে মৌখিক ও ব্যবহারিক পরীক্ষাসহ মোট ৮টি কোর্স সম্পন্ন করতে হয়।

বর্তমানে বিভাগে একটি অত্যাধুনিক সেমিনার লাইব্রেরি এবং ৬টি সমৃদ্ধ ল্যাবরেটরি রয়েছে যা ছাত্রছাত্রীদের মানসম্মত শিক্ষার অন্যতম অনুষঙ্গ। বিভাগীয় পরিবেশ ক্লাব প্রতিবছর “বাংলাদেশ পরিবেশ অলিম্পিয়াড” আয়োজন করে থাকে।

Department of Geography and Environment

The Department of Geography was established in 1948 and was renamed as the Department of Geography and Environment in 1996. The Department occupies the first floor of the Qazi Motahar Hossain Bhaban.

The Department has 30 Faculty members and about 500 students. The Department offers courses on Physical Geography; Human Geography; Environment and Geo-spatial Techniques. Department offers four years B.S. (Hons) Undergraduate programme and one-year M.S Graduate programme. The MS level students are offered courses of three streams covering both thesis and non-thesis group. The graduate programme also offers Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D). A two-year Master of Science in Disaster Management (MSDM) evening programme was initiated in 2010. So far, more than 100 students have completed the degree.

There is a seminar library with modern facilities and six well-equipped laboratories in the Department. These are: GIS & RS; Environmental Analysis; Physical Geography; Cartography and Urban Studio. The Department offers Professional Certificate Courses on GIS. Environment Club, funded and run by the Department, hosts the National Environmental Olympiad (NEO) every year to celebrate World Environment Day. The Department offers awards to the students for their outstanding performance and to help the economically stressed but brilliant students.
