অণুজীব বিজ্ঞান বিভাগ (১৯৭৯)
অণুজীব বিজ্ঞান (মাইক্রোবায়োলজী) বিভাগ ১৯৭৯ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। বিভাগের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা চেয়ারম্যান মরহুম অধ্যাপক ডক্টর আনোয়ারুল আজীম চৌধুরীর নিরলস ও ঐকান্তিক প্রচেষ্টা এবং ‘বাংলাদেশ সোসাইটি অব মাইক্রোবায়োলোজিস্ট এর প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সদস্যদের সর্বাত্মক সহযোগিতায় অল্প সংখ্যক এম. এসসি থিসিস গ্রুপের ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের নিয়ে বিভাগের যাত্রাসূচনা হয়। দেশের বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্র যেমন স্বাস্থ্য, পরিবেশ, কৃষি, খাদ্য, ঔষধ গবেষণা ও শিক্ষা ক্ষেত্রে এবং জাতীয় উন্নয়নে অণুজীব বিজ্ঞানীদের বিশেষ অবদানের গুরুত্ব ও প্রয়োজনীয়তা ব্যাপকভাবে অনুভূত হওয়ায় ১৯৮৯ সাল থেকে বিভাগটি বি. এসসি (সম্মান) কোর্স প্রবর্তন করা হয়। বিভাগে বি.এস. ও এম. এস. ছাড়াও এম. ফিল. ও পিএইচ. ডি. কোর্স চালু আছে। বিভিন্ন কোর্সে প্রায় ২৬০ জন ছাত্র-ছাত্রী শিক্ষারত আছে এবং বিভাগে বর্তমানে ১৯ জন শিক্ষক কর্মরত আছেন।
Department of Microbiology
The Department of Microbiology was established in 1979. Late Professor Dr. Anwarul Azim Chowdhury was the founder Chairman of the Department. The Department was initially located on the ground floor (western side) of the Department of Zoology together with a small chunk of the eastern part of the main Curzon Hall building (ground floor). In September 1999, the Department was moved to the ground and first floor of the newly constructed Science complex building with a floor area of approximately 27,000 square feet.
The Department has steadily gained reputation in education and research at home and abroad and the demand for trained microbiologists gained ground. This necessitated the opening of the undergraduate (Honours) course in the academic year 1988-89. In the academic session 1994-1995, the traditional three-year B. Sc. (Honours ) programme was changed to four-year B. Sc. (Honours) as terminal degree. Microbiology is one of the most preferred subjects amongst the undergraduate students. Presently, the Department offers specialized courses and research facilities in post-graduate levels (MS, M. Phil and Ph. D). Currently, about 260 students are studying in different academic years and 19 Faculty members are involved in teaching and research in the Department.
