উদ্ভিদবিজ্ঞান বিভাগ (১৯৫৪)
ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পুরাতন বিভাগগুলোর মধ্যে উদ্ভিদবিজ্ঞান বিভাগ অন্যতম এবং বাংলাদেশে উদ্ভিদবিজ্ঞান বিষয়ে শিক্ষাদানে প্রথম। উদ্ভিদবিজ্ঞান প্রাথমিকভাবে ১৯৩৯ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিত জীববিজ্ঞান বিভাগের অধীনে থেকে তার পাঠদান কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা শুরু করে এবং পরবর্তীকালে ১৯৫৪ সালে উদ্ভিদ বিজ্ঞান বিভাগ হিসেবে স্বতন্ত্রভাবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করে। সূচনালগ্ন থেকে এই বিভাগ বহু উদ্ভিদবিজ্ঞানী তৈরি করে আসছে এবং অন্যান্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠানের ফিডার বিভাগ হিসেবে কাজ করছে। এই বিভাগ বি. এস. (সম্মান), এম. এস., এম. ফিল. এবং পিএইচ. ডি. ডিগ্রি প্রদান করে থাকে। বিভাগে মাইক্রোবায়োলজি, মাইকোলজি, ফাইকোলজি, প্লান্টপ্যাথোলজি, হাইড্রোবায়োলজি, লিমনোলজি, হাইয়ারক্রিপটোগ্যামস, ট্যাক্সোনমি অব ফ্লাওয়ারিংপ্লান্টস এবং প্লান্টসিসটেমেটিক, জেনেটিক্স, সাইটোজেনেটিক্স, ইকোলজি, প্লান্টব্রিডিং, প্লান্টফিজিওলজি, প্লান্টটিস্যু কালচার, প্লান্টমলিকুলার বায়োলজি-প্রভৃতি বিষয়ে উন্নতমানের গবেষণা কাজ করার জন্য সুযোগ সুবিধা রয়েছে। বিভাগে সালার খান হার্বোরিয়ামে ৫,০০০ এরও অধিক উদ্ভিদ নমুনা সংগ্রহে রয়েছে। মাঠ পর্যায়ে গবেষণার জন্য বিভাগের একটি বোটানিকাল গার্ডেন রয়েছে। বিভাগে বিভিন্ন গবেষণা কাজ সম্পন্ন করার জন্য অত্যাধুনিক যন্ত্রপাতি রয়েছে। বিভাগের গ্রাজুয়েটগণ AERE, BARI, BCSIR, BJRI, BIRDEM, BNH এবং ICDDR,B প্রভৃতি গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠানের সাথে কোলাবরেটিভ গবেষণা করে। বিভাগ তার সুপ্রশিক্ষিত শিক্ষকমণ্ডলী এবং গবেষকদেরকে নিয়ে গর্বিত। বিভাগ থেকে বাংলাদেশ জার্নাল অব বোটানি, জার্নাল অব প্ল্যান্ট টিস্যু কালচার এবং বায়োটেকনো ও বাংলাদেশ জার্নাল অব প্ল্যান্ট ট্যাক্সোনমি নামক তিনটি আন্তর্জাতিক মানের গবেষণা পত্রিকা নিয়মিত প্রকাশিত হচ্ছে। University of Hannover, University of Hamburg, University of Kiel এবং Technical University of Dresden, Germany, Hiroshima University এবং Utsunomiya University of Japan-এর সাথে বিভাগের সক্রিয় সহযোগিতা রয়েছে।
Department of Botany
The Department of Botany is one of the oldest Departments of the University of Dhaka and is the first plant science Department in the country. Botany was initially taught in the Department of Biology established in 1939. The Department of Botany emerged as an independent Department in 1954. Since its inception, the Department has produced a large number of botanists and acted as the feeder Department for other universities and research institutes of the country.
The Department offers BS (Honours), MS, M. Phil and Ph. D degrees. The Department has facilities to carry out advanced research in the areas of microbiology, mycology, phycology, plant pathology, hydrobiology, limnology, higher cryptogams, taxonomy of flowering plants and plant systematics, genetics, cytogenetics, ecology, plant breeding, plant physiology, plant tissue culture and plant molecular biology. The Department has a herbarium with over 5,000 specimens.
It has also a botanical garden with facilities to conduct field experiments. The Department has a pool of sophisticated equipments required to carry out various researches. The graduate students undertake collaborative research with scientists of various organizations like AERE, BARI, BCSIR, BJRI, BIRDEM, BNH and ICDDR,B. The Department is proud of its well-trained teaching and research staff. It publishes Bangladesh Journal of Botany, Journal of Plant Tissue Culture & Biotechnology and Bangladesh Journal of Plant Taxonomy regularly. The Department has active collaborations with the University of Hannover, University of Hamburg, University of Kiel and Technical University of Dresden, Germany and also with Hiroshima University and Utsunomiya University of Japan.
