গণযোগাযোগ ও সাংবাদিকতা বিভাগ (১৯৬২)
১৯৬২ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠার পর থেকে গত অর্ধশতকেরও বেশি সময় ধরে বাংলাদেশের গণমাধ্যম ও সাংবাদিকতার শিক্ষায় নেতৃত্বদান করছে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গণযোগাযোগ ও সাংবাদিকতা বিভাগ। একবছর মেয়াদি সান্ধ্যকালীন ডিপ্লোমা কোর্সের মাধ্যমে যাত্রা শুরু হয়েছিল সাংবাদিকতা বিভাগের। ১৯৬৮ সালে এ বিভাগে দুই বছরের দুই পর্বের এমএ কোর্স চালু হয় এবং ১৯৭০ সালে মাস্টার্সের প্রথম ব্যাচ উত্তীর্ণ হয়।
স্বাধীনতার পর ইংরেজির পাশপাশি এ বিভাগে বাংলা মাধ্যম চালু হয়। বাড়ানো হয় শিক্ষক সংখ্যাও। ১৯৭৭ সালে এক বছরের ডিপ্লোমা বন্ধ করে তিন বছরের অনার্স কোর্স শুরু করা হয়। বিভাগের কার্যক্রম রাতের পরিবর্তে দিনে নিয়ে আসা হয়। একইসাথে বিভাগের নাম বদলে রাখা হয় ‘গণযোগাযোগ ও সাংবাদিকতা বিভাগ’। উপমহাদেশের সাংবাদিকতা শিক্ষায় এটিই প্রথম অনার্স কোর্স। ১৯৯৭-৯৮ সালে চার বছরের অনার্স চালু হয়, ২০০২ সালে কলা অনুষদ থেকে সামাজিক বিজ্ঞান অনুষদে নিয়ে আসা হয় এই বিভাগ।
গণযোগাযোগ ও সাংবাদিকতা বিভাগ স্নাতক (সম্মান) ও স্নাতকোত্তরের পাশাপাশি এম. ফিল ও পিএইচ.ডি ডিগ্রি প্রদান করে থাকে। এছাড়া ২০০৮ থেকে ২০১২ সাল পর্যন্ত এ বিভাগে নরওয়ের অর্থসাহায্যে রিজিওনাল মাস্টার্স কোর্স পরিচালিত হয়েছিল। সাংবাদিকতার ব্যবহারিক দক্ষতা বাড়ানোর জন্য বিভাগে ডেস্কটপ পাবলিশিং, ফটো সাংবাদিকতা ও ভিডিওগ্রাফি ল্যাব রয়েছে।
Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (1962)
Since its inception in 1962, the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism has been leading the communication and journalism education in Bangladesh. This Department initially started with one-year evening diploma course. A two-year M.A course was introduced in 1968 and the first masters batch graduated in 1970.
The Department introduced Bangla medium along with English medium after 1971, and more Faculty members were appointed. The one-year diploma course was abolished in 1977 and a three-year honours course was introduced. At the same time, the name of the Department was changed to “The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism” from “The Department of Journalism”. This honours course in journalism was the first of its kind in the Indian sub-continent. In 1997-98, the Department introduced the four-year honours course. The Department was shifted from the Arts Faculty to the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2002.
Currently, the Department offers four-year honours and one-year masters degrees along with M. Phil and Ph. D degrees. The Department also ran a Regional Masters programme with financial support from Norway from 2008 to 2012. There are three labs in the Department for professional training in desktop publishing, photo-journalism and videography.
