সমাজবিজ্ঞান বিভাগ (১৯৫৭)
প্রফেসর লেভী স্ট্রাউস-এর পরামর্শে ও ইউনেস্কোর আর্থিক ও কারিগরি সহায়তায় ১৯৫৭ সালে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে সমাজবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের যাত্রা শুরু হয়। সেই থেকে দীর্ঘ পথ অতিক্রমের পর সমাজবিজ্ঞান বিভাগ ২০০৭ সালে ৫০ বছর পূর্তি উদ্যাপন করে। এ বিভাগের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা চেয়ারম্যান ছিলেন প্রখ্যাত ফরাসি সামাজিক নৃবিজ্ঞানী পিয়েরে বেসাইনী। সমাজবিজ্ঞান বিভাগে বর্তমানে ৩০জন শিক্ষক কর্মরত আছেন যাদের মধ্যে ১৯জন অধ্যাপক, ৩জন সহযোগী অধ্যাপক, ৬জন সহকারী অধ্যাপক, ২জন প্রভাষক এবং ১জন সংখ্যাতিরিক্ত শিক্ষক পদে নিয়োজিত। এ বিভাগে ২০১৩-১৪ শিক্ষাবর্ষে ১৩৮৭ জন ছাত্র-ছাত্রী অধ্যয়নরত আছে। বর্তমানে চার বছরের অনার্স ও এক বছরের মাস্টার্স কোর্সসহ এম. ফিল. ও পি. এইচ. ডি. প্রোগ্রাম চালু আছে এ বিভাগে।
প্রতিষ্ঠালগ্ন থেকে এ বিভাগ সমাজবিজ্ঞানের বিকাশে তথা সামাজিক পরিবর্তনে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করে আসছে। বর্তমান বাংলাদেশে সমাজবিজ্ঞানের মর্যাদা ও চাহিদা পূর্বের তুলনায় অনেক বেশি হওয়ায় এ বিভাগে পর্যায়ক্রমে আধুনিক কোর্সসমূহ অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হয়েছে। এ বিভাগে নিজস্ব কম্পিউটার ল্যাব, একটি জাদুঘর ও প্রায় ২৮১৪টি বই সংবলিত একটি সমৃদ্ধ সেমিনার লাইব্রেরি রয়েছে যা শিক্ষক ও ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের একাডেমিক চাহিদা পূরণ করে থাকে।
Department of Sociology (1957)
The Department of Sociology was established at the University of Dhaka as early as 1957 (academic session 1957-58), and thus is one of the oldest sociological centres in Bangladesh. It established an unmistakable academic profile under the leadership of Pierre Bessaignet, a UNESCO advisor and a famous social anthropologist, who first chaired the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka. The Department opened its doors at the University of Dhaka under a UNESCO programme with four Faculty members. Professor Nazmul Karim - one of the founders of Bangladesh Sociology is the first Bangalee head of this Department who took charge in 1958, joining as a Reader at the Department.
The foundation of the Department of Sociology at this university paved the way for undertaking social research in Bangladesh. The Department offers a complete education in the discipline of sociology at four academic levels: Bachelor’s, Master’s, M. Phil and Ph. D degrees. The Department is the nation’s largest sociology Department, with 30 Faculty members and about 1387 (Session 2013-14) students in its graduate and undergraduate programmes. The Department strives to give students a diverse exposure to and understanding of sociology, offering 50 courses, ranging from Medical Sociology to the Development of Theoretical Perspectives in Sociology. Over the years, the Department has put a strong emphasis both on the methodological and theoretical preparation for its students.
The Department is determined to maintain its reputation by establishing excellent academic environment that provides students with ample opportunity to think critically and apply the knowledge learnt in the field of Sociology.
