আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগ (১৯৪৭)
আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগ ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষা ও গবেষণায় শ্রেষ্ঠত্বের বিচারে প্রথম সারির প্রতিষ্ঠান। ব্রিটিশ শাসনামলের শেষ পর্যায়ে ১৯৪৭ সালের জুলাই মাসে অবিভক্ত ভারতবর্ষে প্রথম আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক পাঠ ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে শুরু হয়। এই ঐতিহাসিক যাত্রা দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার সর্বপ্রথম আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক শিক্ষার প্রতিষ্ঠান হিসেবে তাই এই বিভাগকে এক অনন্য অবস্থানে নিয়ে গেছে। এ বিভাগের পাঠ্যক্রম সামাজিক বিজ্ঞানের অনেক ভিন্ন বিষয়ের সুন্দর সংমিশ্রণে তৈরি। এগুলোর মধ্যে অন্যতম হলো কূটনীতি, পররাষ্ট্রনীতি, যুদ্ধ কৌশলবিদ্যা, বিশ্বায়ন, আন্তর্জাতিক প্রতিষ্ঠান, আইন, অভিবাসন, মানবাধিকার, আন্তর্জাতিক রাজনৈতিক অর্থনীতি এবং অন্যান্য সমসাময়িক বিষয়াবলি। এছাড়া এই বিভাগে আঞ্চলিক ও দেশ ভিত্তিক রাজনৈতিক ও সাম্প্রতিক বিষয়গুলো পড়ানো হয়ে থাকে। তাত্ত্বিক জ্ঞান ও বাস্তবধর্মী প্রয়োগ এ দুয়ের সংমিশ্রণ এ বিভাগের পাঠদান কর্মসূচিকে সমৃদ্ধ করে থাকে। এ বিভাগ বর্তমানে চার বছর মেয়াদি বিএসএস ডিগ্রি, এক বছর মেয়াদি এমএসএস ডিগ্রি, এম. ফিল ডিগ্রি এবং পিএইচ. ডি ডিগ্রি প্রদান করে থাকে।
২০০৩ সালে আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগ এ বিষয়ে সার্টিফিকেট কোর্স চালু করে যা পরবর্তীতে ২০০৮ সালে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অনুমতিক্রমে চার মাস মেয়াদি পোস্ট গ্রাজুয়েট ডিপ্লোমা কোর্সে রুপান্তরিত হয়। বিভিন্ন পেশায় নিয়োজিত ও অন্যান্য বিষয়ে গ্রাজুয়েট ডিগ্রিপ্রাপ্ত অভিজ্ঞ ব্যক্তিদের জন্য বিশেষভাবে এই কোর্সটি তৈরি করা হয়েছে। এ ধরনের বিশেষায়িত কোর্সের সফলতার ধারাবাহিকতায় ২০১৬ সালে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আইন অনুযায়ী প্রফেশনাল মাস্টার্স ইন ইন্টারন্যাশনাল রিলেশন্স (পিএমআইআর) নামক দেড় বছর মেয়াদি কোর্স চালু করা হয়।
Department of International Relations
The Department of International Relations is one of the premier and top ranked centres of academic excellence and research at the University of Dhaka. The Department was established in July 1947 when the Indian subcontinent was still a part of the union of territories under the erstwhile British Commonwealth and Empire. This historical context gave it a unique distinction and status of being the first academic Department in any South Asian University to offer academic degrees in International Relations (IR). The curriculum of the Department combines a blend of courses in the diverse areas of International Relations. These include, among others, diplomacy, foreign policy, globalisation, governance and development, international law, international migration, human rights, international political economy, gender, global environmental politics, and international security. The course curriculum also includes a range of area and country studies, covering Africa, Europe, North America, South America, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. The understanding of these issues is constantly updated in congruence with the latest developments in global affairs and shifing theoretical paradigms. The Deparment’s degree-awarding programmes include Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours), Master of Social Sciences (MSS), Master of Philosophy (M. Phil), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D).
In 2003, the Department introduced a Certificate Programme in International Relations (CIR) which evolved in 2008 into a demanding and rigorous Post-Graduate Diploma in International Relations (PGDIR) programme designed for graduates from different academic and professional backgrounds who seek to gain additional credentials in international affairs. This has been a part of the Department’s endeavour to go beyond the regular degree programmes in order to respond to the growing demands of IR knowledge from non-IR graduates and professionals. In 2016, the Department introduced Professional Masters in Internatioal Relations (PMIR) degree programme for the professionals.
