অর্থনীতি বিভাগ (১৯২১)
১৯২১ সালে যে কয়েকটি বিভাগ নিয়ে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের যাত্রা শুরু হয়েছিল সেগুলোর মধ্যে অর্থনীতি বিভাগ অন্যতম। প্রতিষ্ঠালগ্ন থেকে জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যায়ে বিভিন্ন অবদানের জন্য এই বিভাগ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় তথা সমগ্র জাতির গৌরবের উৎস হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয়ে আসছে।
মূলত ৩টি উদ্দেশ্যকে সামনে নিয়ে অর্থনীতি বিভাগের কার্যক্রম পরিচালিত হয়ে আসছে: ১) অর্থনীতিশাস্ত্রের আধুনিক তাত্ত্বিক এবং প্রায়োগিক জ্ঞানে ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদেরকে সমৃদ্ধ করে তোলা, ২) অর্থনীতির বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে মৌলিক গবেষণা পরিচালনা করা, ৩) পেশাগত দিক দিয়ে প্রয়োজনীয় দিকনির্দেশনা ও সেবা প্রদান এবং জাতীয়ভাবে বিভিন্ন সরকারি নীতিনির্ধারণে সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষকে সহায়তা প্রদান।
উপর্যুক্ত উদ্দেশ্যগুলোকে সামনে রেখে অর্থনীতি বিভাগ দেশের সার্বিক উন্নয়ন ও সমৃদ্ধির জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় প্রতিটি ক্ষেত্রকে অন্তর্ভুক্ত করে বিভাগের পাঠক্রমকে করেছে সমৃদ্ধ ও যুগোপযোগী। ৭০টি আধুনিক কম্পিউটার সমৃদ্ধ একটি কম্পিউটার ল্যাব, আধুনিক সেমিনার কক্ষ ও মাল্টিমিডিয়া সমৃদ্ধ ক্লাসরুমসমূহ বিভাগের শিক্ষা-ব্যবস্থাকে করেছে অত্যাধুনিক। বর্তমানে এই বিভাগে চার বছর মেয়াদি বি. এস. এস (সম্মান), এক বছর মেয়াদি এম. এস. এস. ডিগ্রির পাশাপাশি এম. ফিল. ও পিএইচ. ডি. ডিগ্রি প্রদান করা হয়ে থাকে।
সংশ্লিষ্ট ক্ষেত্রে পাঠদান ও মৌলিক গবেষণার জন্য অত্র বিভাগ জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে স্বীকৃত ও প্রশংসিত হয়ে আসছে। শিক্ষার পাশাপাশি এই বিভাগ শিক্ষার্থীদের সহশিক্ষা ও মানবিক কার্যক্রমে সহযোগিতা ও উৎসাহ প্রদান করে আসছে।
Department of Economics
The Department of Economics is as old as the University of Dhaka. Since its inception in 1921, it has been contributing to several areas of economics both nationally and internationally.
The Department of Economics has three consistent objectives: 1) to provide students with quality education including both theoretical and empirical knowledge; 2) to conduct pioneering research in economics; and 3) to provide directions and services to the professional communities and cooperate in national policy-making.
To serve those objectives and to include the relevant fields required for overall development of the country, the Department has enriched its syllabi. A modern computer lab, a well-decorated seminar room and multimedia classrooms have modernized the Department. Currently, the Department offers a four-year Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS) degree, and a one-year Master of Social Sciences (MSS) degree. Besides, the Department offers M. Phil and Ph. D degrees in different branches of economics under different programmes.
The Department has a reputation for outstanding teaching and research, and the Faculty members have worldwide recognition and appreciation for their academic and research activities.
